Why Is My Garage Door Won’t Open or Close?

Sometimes garage doors stop working and refuse to open or close leaving you and many other homeowners frustrated. To help you guy understand it better our garage door experts have created a list of reasons why this might happen and how to fix it.

Is the Door Locked?

If you try to open your garage door but it doesn’t move, the first thing you should check is if’s locked. Sometimes you just forgot you’ve locked it and unlocking it is all you need to get the door working again.

Power Source Issues

Check if your opener is getting power, it might not work if the circuit breaker has tripped or if it accidentally got unplugged.

Misaligned or Blocked Safety Sensors

Modern models have safety sensors to prevent accidents. If your door won’t close the problem might be with these sensors. Check if they are dirty or blocked, also they need to be aligned in a straight line for the laser beam to pass through them in order for them to work properly.

Wall Switch and Remote

If your garage door opener isn’t working with the remote the problem might be the remote’s batteries or it lost its rolling code communication and requires reprogramming. Try new batteries and if it’s not fixing the problem call for professional help. If the door doesn’t open if you use the wall switch there could be a broken electrical wire issue between the wall switch or the receiver.

Broken Springs

Garage door springs are critical parts in the garage door system, they support the door’s weight when it opens and closes and if they break you won’t be able to move the door. Fixing these issue by yourself can be quite dangerous and we recommend to let a professional handle the repair.

Misaligned Tracks

Garage doors move up and down within tracks and if the tracks are bent the door might not move properly or completely get stuck. Sometimes small track adjustments could solve the issue, but if the tracks are badly damaged you should definitely call a professional repair technician.
